This workshop was sponsored by Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (www.ims.org). The iNet-IMS “Intelligent Non-Hierarchical Manufacturing Networks” IMS-MTP initiative (www.inet-ims.net) was created in June 2010 to foster the collaboration among 5 FP7 projects in order to define a Framework for Collaboration in Non-Hierarchical Manufacturing Network context, which extends the scope of the single projects. The workshop was supported and leaded by members of the iNet- IMS consortium belonging to the following projects:

Resilient Multi-Plant Networks: REMPLANET

During the workshop, some of the current results already achieved in the iNet-IMS FP7 Projects were presented in terms of theoretical and methodological framework improvements as well as of supporting tools development. The proposed approaches have been developed in order to be as general as possible, in order to facilitate a wide adoption by the enterprises. Nevertheless, the needs and specificities of particular sectors (textile and apparel, footwear, machinery and equipments) from which belong the companies involved in the projects are elicited and addressed. The challenges and opportunities linked to product differentiation, mass customisation and customer driven innovation were specifically addressed. The workshop provided an excellent opportunity to discuss about state of the art enhancement in the field of design and management of collaborative manufacturing networks.

Moreover, the goal of this group will be to last when the REMPLANET project finishes in order to maintain the research and innovation in the associated knowledge areas in the future. To do so, some subgroups for the different areas of knowledge covered by the REMPLANET project will be created.

Each project was represented by up to three participants from at least two different organisations including the coordinator, a young researcher, and an optional third participant. In the case of REMPLANET, the Project Coordinator: Raul Poler, a young researcher: Julien Maheut and a representative of a REMPLANET industrial partner: Michael Bernas from FESTO attended the workshop.

Two presentations were performed with regard to REMPLANET Project. The first one, presented by Raul Poler, offered a general overview of the project and its main expected results. The second one, presented by Julien Maheut, showed a mathematical programming model for supply chain operations scheduling in distribute plants related to the research activities performed within WP4: REMPLANET Simulation and Optimization Decision Support.

Mass customization is a middle ground in-between two extremes
strategies; mass production (mass producers), and pure customization (craft
manufacturers). This paper focuses on the knowledge stair path, very much
related with SMEs evolving from a craft manufacturer origin towards an
industrialized manufacturer of customized products. This evolution implies in
practice the development and implementation of product and process
rationalization methods, as well as decision support management procedures
and toolkits to automate involved task in order to achieve efficient
production of customized goods. The paper presents an overview of these
basics, based on an applied research developed by IKERLAN-IK4 for a coach
maker that aimed to evolve from being a local pure customizer to becoming a
 global mass customizer.

The research is set up to develop a framework for establishing clear

 context.

The presented research at this conference demonstrates a framework of
supply network configurations by which network structures are adapted to fit
with the mass customisation characteristics. The research integrates research
findings in the literature for classification of supply network structures,
roles of supply chain partners, features of supply chain partner
relationships and features of demands into a framework presentation of
operational arrangements of supply processes according to customer needs and
 given manufacturing strategies.

described the methodology to use, and leaded the REMPLANET partners during the
whole process. This process included discussing about the expected results of

presented their respective visions about the expected results, considering:
their level of innovation and the expected benefits. Later, partners discussed
about intellectual property rights and explotaition issues, taking into account
the background and foreground generated by each partner to each result. Then,
the animator proposed the generarion of a Risk Assessment and Action Plan,
identifying key risks, possible solutions and actions to be implemented to
reduce the risk. Finally, the seminar concluded with the generation of a Plan
for Using and Disseminating Foreground.

In the ESS different
visions arised and a process of discussions and agreement took place to
establish a common reference. After the discussion, a first approach of expected
results was obtained (see Table 1). All partners agreed that an important point to
guarantee the success of the results is that they should provide stand alone
usability and usefulness.

The MCPC (Mass Customization & Personalization Conference) is a biennial conference originally devoted to Mass Customization & Personalization. In recent years the content has broadened including also open innovation, user co-creation and other strategies of customer-driven value creation. In the MCPC 2009 (www.mcpc2009.com) held in Helsinki at the beginning of October (4th – 7th), REMPLANET members have presented different results.

In regard to presentations, Raul Poler (CIGIP), REMPLANET project coordinator, did a general presentation of REMPLANET: REMPLANET: Resilient Multi-Plant Networks. Whereas, Ditmar Ihlenburg (Festo) and Eduardo Saiz (Ikerlan) focused in specific subjects presenting “Managing customerinteraction ininnovation processes with value creation networks” and “Integration of a new product catalogue process generation and resilient supply network configurations for several customised demand scenarios” respectively. Moreover, Eduardo Saiz also presented the paper “Customised Order Fulfillment in a Machine Tool Supply Network”.

In the IWEI 2009 conference, the 2nd IFIP WG5.8 Workshop on Enterprise Interoperability held in Valencia, the 13th and 14th of October, Ruben de Juan presented the paper “SOP4EBPM Generating Executable Business Services from Business Models” a position paper about the IT platform that will be developed in the REMPLANET project for supporting the decentralized decision making process.

REMPLANET has participated in the IMS Manufacturing Technology Platform and Roadmap Meeting,
9-10 November, Geneva.

The Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) program is an industry-led, global, collaborative research and development program established to develop the next generation of manufacturing and processing technologies. IMS activities include providing a framework for global cooperative
research, assisting project consortium formation, networking people on a global basis, conducting forums to understand current and future manufacturing requirements, and disseminating information resulting from these activities. In so doing, it enhances the quality of life of the world
community.

The 4 NMP-2008-3.3-1 Projects (REMPLANET, Net-Challenge, CONVERGE and inTime) celebrated a meeting the first day of the event in order to prepare a joint IMS MTP Initiative. The result of this meeting was a proposal entitled iNet-IMS “Intelligent Non-Hierarchical Manufacturing Networks”. The objective of this initiative is the extension of scope of the EC-FP7 funded projects REMPLANET, CONVERGE, Net-challenge and inTime, with respect to IMS-specific tasks and results.
